For all those wondering what is happening over the far side of the football pitch, this is an introduction to the Fowey Farm.
My name is Richard Brown and I have been a youth worker for over 30 years. I have run a variety of projects including a woodland project. I was approached the school sometime ago with the idea of building a farm on school premises. And so the building started.
Their are a variety of young people involved and what you see has been built almost entirely by the young people. We currently have a barn which will be used to store tools and at a later date produce, raised beds and the pride of the show, chickens. Let me introduce you to Ben Eggy.
Ben is one of six chickens that we recently obtained from a breeder. He is a White Star Pullet or chicken and unsurprisingly runs the show. He is a magnificent chicken, currently our best layer and tends to produce eggs with a double yoke.
The eggs themselves are small at the moment. Chickens lay small eggs at the start of their laying life. They will gradually get bigger over the next 6 to 8 weeks at which point they will remain that size for the rest of their lives. Ben lays the white egg.
In this first post about the farm, I wanted to acknowledge the help of all the staff at school and their enthusiasm for the farm project. Mr Eddy our head encouraged the project and continues to chat to the young people about the work they are doing. Without his support the farm would not have got going. And now he has allowed us to call one of the chickens after him. And I think it is wonderful that the chicken named is also the boss of the run!
