Our orchard is a place of quiet beauty, a haven where the seasons unfold in a symphony of blossoms, ripening fruit, and rustling leaves. It’s a space that invites you to slow down, to breathe in the fresh air, and to connect with the natural rhythms of the land.
We’ve carefully curated a diverse mix of fruit trees, including crisp apples, sweet pears, and vibrant cherries. Each tree tells a story, a testament to the years they’ve stood, bearing witness to the changing seasons. Beneath their branches, the ground has been generously mulched. This isn’t just about aesthetics; mulching is a vital part of orchard health. It helps retain moisture in the soil, preventing it from drying out during the warmer months. It also suppresses weeds, reducing competition for nutrients and water, and as it decomposes, it enriches the soil, providing essential nutrients for the trees.
Instead of bare earth, the orchard floor is a sea of gently swaying grasses. These grasses aren’t just practical; they add a touch of wild beauty to the space. They ripple and dance in the wind, creating a soothing sound that blends with the birdsong. Running your fingers through the soft, feathery blades is a sensory delight, a reminder of the simple pleasures of nature.
Nestled amongst the trees, we have a thriving patch of strawberries. These sweet, juicy berries are a summer highlight, a treat enjoyed by visitors and volunteers alike. Their vibrant red colour adds a splash of brightness to the orchard, and their delicious flavour is a testament to the fertile soil and the nurturing environment.
Looking ahead, we’re embarking on an exciting project: the creation of a labyrinth. This won’t be just any labyrinth; it will be a fragrant, edible maze, planted with a combination of roses and raspberries. The roses will provide a feast for the eyes and nose, their delicate blooms and sweet scent filling the air. The raspberries will add a touch of sweetness, inviting visitors to pick and enjoy the ripe berries as they navigate the winding paths. Imagine wandering through this living maze, surrounded by the beauty and fragrance of roses, the sweetness of raspberries, and the gentle rustling of leaves.
The orchard is more than just a place to grow fruit; it’s a place of peace, a sanctuary where nature and human hands work together to create something beautiful and bountiful. It’s a place where we can connect with the land, learn about the cycles of nature, and enjoy the simple pleasures of life.
