Making First Contact in Detached Youth Work:
Detached youth work relies on building trust and rapport with young people on their terms, in their spaces. Here are some tips for a successful first contact:
Be Approachable:
- Body Language: Maintain open, non-threatening body language. Avoid crossing arms or looking stern.
- Clothing: Dress similarly to the young people you’ll encounter, but professionally.
- Introduce Yourself: Briefly explain who you are, your role, and the organisation you represent.
Start with Observation:
- Blend In: Spend some time observing the group dynamic before approaching.
- Look for Openings: Wait for a lull in conversation or activity before initiating contact.
Initiate Contact Gently:
- Start with a Greeting: A simple “hello” or “how’s it going?” can be a good opener.
- Find Common Ground: Look for shared interests or current events to spark conversation.
- Be Patient: Building trust takes time. Don’t get discouraged if the youth aren’t immediately receptive.
Focus on Building Rapport:
- Active Listening: Show genuine interest in what they have to say.
- Open-Ended Questions: Ask questions that encourage conversation beyond a simple yes or no answer.
- Be Non-judgmental: Accept young people as they are, without judgment or criticism.
Respect Boundaries:
- Don’t Force Conversation: If the youth seem disinterested, politely excuse yourself and try again another time.
- Be Aware of Personal Space: Maintain a comfortable distance that respects their boundaries.
Additional Tips:
- Offer Resources (optional): Carry brochures or information about relevant services, but don’t push them.
- Be Familiar with Local Issues: Knowing local concerns can help build trust and show you care about their community.
- Maintain Confidentiality: Assure them that conversations will be confidential unless there’s a safety concern.
- Safety First: Always be aware of your surroundings and have a safety plan in place.
Remember, the goal is to build trust and establish a connection. By being approachable, respectful, and genuinely interested, you’ll take the first steps towards a positive relationship with the young people you encounter.
