During 2024 we constructed our barn and polytunnel along with a chicken house and establishing an orchard. Our strategy for 2025 is to complete all building works and landscaping so that the farm is established and running effectively.
The ultimate aim of this multifaceted endeavour is to create a sustainable and thriving hub that integrates food cultivation and animal husbandry on a school farm to provide fresh, healthy produce and educate the young people about agriculture and sustainability. It will also offer educational programs, promoting hands-on learning and environmental awareness. The space serves as a community meeting place, fostering social connection and offering relaxation opportunities through access to nature and recreational activities, ultimately aiming to cultivate a deeper connection between people, food, and the environment while building a resilient and engaged community. It will also provide opportunities for space within a natural environment.
Vision
To create a sustainable and educational farm that promotes environmental responsibility, community engagement, and personal well-being.
Overarching Objectives
Sustainability: Reduce environmental impact and increase self-sufficiency.
Education: Provide learning opportunities about sustainable farming and alternative food systems.
Community: Foster a welcoming space for relaxation and connection with nature.
Well-being: Promote physical and mental health through interaction with the natural world.
Projects
Solar Panel Installation
Aim
To generate renewable energy for farm operations, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and lowering electricity costs.
Objectives
- Power the borehole pump, reducing reliance on grid electricity.
- Provide electricity for other farm needs (e.g., lighting, tools).
- Reduce the farm’s carbon footprint.
- Cost: £3000
Justification
This project directly supports the sustainability objective by reducing the farm’s environmental impact and operating costs in the long run.
Borehole Drilling
Aim
To establish a reliable and sustainable water source for the farm, reducing reliance on mains water and ensuring year-round irrigation.
Objectives
- Provide water for crops and livestock.
- Reduce water costs and reliance on external sources.
- Enhance the farm’s resilience to drought and water shortages.
- Cost: £4500
Justification
This project is crucial for the farm’s self-sufficiency and sustainability, ensuring a consistent water supply for all needs.
Pond and Stream Construction
Aim
To create diverse aquatic ecosystems that support biodiversity, provide educational opportunities, and enhance the aesthetic appeal of the farm.
Objectives
- Construct two ponds: one for aquaponics and one for ducks.
- Establish a natural stream connecting the ponds, promoting water flow and oxygenation.
- Use the aquaponics pond to demonstrate sustainable food production methods.
- Provide habitat for ducks, promoting animal welfare and biodiversity.
- Create a peaceful and visually appealing environment for visitors and the community.
- Cost: £5000 (liners and digger)
Justification
This project supports multiple objectives, including education, sustainability, community well-being, and biodiversity.
Duck Housing and Seating Area
Aim
To provide suitable shelter and care for ducks while creating a comfortable and inviting space for visitors to relax and enjoy the farm environment.
Objectives
- Construct a duck house that provides protection from the elements and predators.
- Incorporate a swing and seating area near the duck pond.
- Create an interactive space where visitors can observe and learn about ducks.
- Enhance the farm’s aesthetic appeal and recreational value.
- Cost: To be determined based on design and materials.
Justification
This project complements the pond construction by providing a suitable habitat for ducks and creating a welcoming space for visitors to connect with nature and enjoy the farm.
Timeline and Implementation
We will prioritise projects based on our budget and immediate needs. We will phase in projects over time, starting with the most critical ones, such as the solar panel installation and borehole drilling.
Evaluation
We will regularly assess the progress and impact of each project against its objectives. This will help measure the success of our strategy and make any necessary adjustments along the way.
