It’s a mystery wrapped in a rind, my friend! Some say it’s because grapefruits grow in clusters, like grapes on a vine, but if that were true, wouldn’t they be called vinefruits? Others claim it’s due to the grapefruit’s slightly grape-like flavour, but let’s be honest, grapefruits taste more like sunshine mixed with a hint of sour surprise.
Maybe the name is a marketing ploy, a way to trick unsuspecting fruit lovers into thinking they’re getting a sweet, juicy treat when, in reality, they’re about to get stuck into a citrusy adventure. Or perhaps grapefruits are named after their distant cousin, the grape, as a way of saying, “Hey, we may not be as popular, but we’re still part of the family!”
Whatever the reason, let’s just be grateful they’re not called “sourballs” or “puckerfruits,” shall we?
She’s eating pizza but this is the face I end up with when eating grapefruit alias vinefruits, sourballs or puckerfruits!
