What’s the Big Deal About Being Jewish?
Paul starts by asking, “What advantage then has the Jew?” He’s addressing a common thought at the time: that being Jewish automatically gave you a special status with God. After all, they had God’s law, the promises, and a rich history of faith.
But Paul points out that it’s not just about being Jewish—it’s about trusting in God’s promises. He reminds us that even though some Jews didn’t believe, it didn’t change the fact that God always keeps His promises.
God is Always Faithful
This leads Paul to a powerful statement: “Let God be true, and every human being a liar.” He’s saying that no matter what we do or say, God’s truth always stands. We might mess up, make mistakes, or even doubt, but God’s faithfulness remains rock solid.
Can We Do Bad Things So Good Can Happen?
Paul then addresses a tricky question: If God can bring good out of our mistakes, does that mean it’s okay to do wrong things? Absolutely not! He strongly condemns this idea, emphasising that God’s goodness doesn’t excuse our bad behaviour.
What Does This Mean for Us?
Even though this passage was written centuries ago, it has some important lessons for us today:
- God’s faithfulness is unshakable: No matter what challenges we face, we can always trust in God’s love and promises.
- Our actions matter: Even though God is forgiving, we shouldn’t use that as an excuse to do wrong things. We are called to live a life that reflects His goodness.
- Truth matters: In a world filled with fake news and conflicting opinions, it’s important to remember that God’s truth is the ultimate reality.
- Everyone needs God’s grace: We all fall short, no matter our background or beliefs. We all need God’s forgiveness and love.
This passage reminds us that our faith isn’t about earning God’s favour or being better than others. It’s about trusting in His faithfulness, seeking His truth, and living a life that honours Him.
