In my current role I am developing a ‘farm’ at Fowey River Academy. As part of that development I have been erecting a polytunnel with the students. It has been hard work but the polytunnel will bring benefits.
- Gardening is a calming and mindful activity. The process of nurturing plants can reduce anxiety and promote relaxation.
- The act of gardening releases endorphins, which can elevate mood and combat feelings of depression.
- Successfully growing produce provides a sense of accomplishment and boosts confidence.
- Gardening encourages curiosity and problem-solving skills. It can also foster a sense of responsibility and connection to nature.
- Gardening can be a shared activity, promoting teamwork and social interaction, especially valuable for those struggling with loneliness or isolation.
- Gardening involves various physical tasks such as digging, planting, weeding, and harvesting, contributing to overall fitness.
- Growing their own produce can encourage young people to make healthier food choices and appreciate the value of fresh ingredients.
- Handling seeds, tools, and plants helps develop fine and gross motor skills, particularly important for younger children.
- Spending time in the polytunnel allows for sunlight exposure, promoting Vitamin D production, essential for bone health and immune function.
- The controlled environment of a polytunnel allows for gardening even during colder months, providing ongoing engagement and learning opportunities.
- The polytunnel offers a safe space to garden, regardless of weather conditions, ensuring consistent activity and reducing frustration.
Growing in a polytunnel contributes to a holistic approach to well-being, fostering both physical and mental health in young people. It provides valuable life skills, encourages healthy habits, and creates a positive and engaging environment for growth and development.
