Now that we know what we have—Jesus, this great High Priest with ready access to God—let’s not let it slip through our fingers. We don’t have a priest who is out of touch with our reality. He’s been through weakness and testing, experienced it all—all but the sin. So let’s walk right up to him and get what he is so ready to give. Take the mercy, accept the help.
Hebrews 4:14-16 MSG
Jesus Christ in his uniqueness unites deity (He is the Son of God) and humanity, so he can bring people to God and bring people all that God has for them. Common people were not permitted to enter the holy of holies, the priests were only allowed to go as far as the veil and only the high priest was allowed to go past the veil once a year. But every believer is invited and encouraged to go boldly into the throne of grace. As it says in the verse, “walk right up to him and get what he is ready to give”. What does he want to give?
Mercy means that God does not give us what we do deserve;
Grace means that he gives us what we do not deserve.
Jesus is ministering mercy to every person who wants his help.
Christmas is a time for giving, but Jesus gives all year round, he is our great High Priest.
I am bending my knee
In the eye of the Father who created me,
In the eye of the Son who purchased me,
In the eye of the Spirit who cleansed me,
In friendship and affection.
Through Your own Anointed One, O God,
Bestow upon us fullness in our need,
Love towards God,
The affection of God,
The smile of God,
The wisdom of God,
The grace of God,
The fear of God,
And the will of God
To do on the world of the Three,
As angels and saints
Do in heaven;
Each shade and light,
Each day and night,
Each time in kindness,
Give Thou us Thy Spirit. Amen
