Have you ever felt like life’s throwing you constant difficulties and you’re not sure how to get life right? Well, Micah 6:8 has some ancient wisdom that’s surprisingly relevant for us today:
“He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”
Let’s break this down in a way that makes sense for us:
- Act Justly: This isn’t about being a superhero. It means being fair, sticking up for what’s right, and treating everyone with respect, even if they’re different from you. Think about those times you see someone being bullied or treated unfairly – speaking up is acting justly.
- Love Mercy: We all mess up sometimes, right? Loving mercy means showing compassion and forgiveness, both to others and to yourself. It’s about giving second chances, understanding where someone’s coming from, and not being quick to judge.
- Walk Humbly with Your God: This isn’t about feeling small or unimportant. It’s about recognising that we’re not the centre of the universe. It’s about being open to learning, admitting when we’re wrong, and realising we’re all in this together. It’s also about having a relationship with God where we listen to Him and try to follow His lead.
Why does this matter for us?
This verse gives us a road map for living a life that’s meaningful and fulfilling. When we act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly, we:
- Build stronger relationships: Treating others with fairness and compassion creates trust and connection.
- Make the world a better place: Standing up for justice and showing mercy can have a ripple effect, making our communities and even the world a little brighter.
- Find peace and purpose: Walking humbly with God helps us discover our place in the world and find meaning in our lives.
How can we put this into practice?
Here are a few ideas:
- Be kind to everyone, even those you don’t agree with: You don’t have to be best friends with everyone, but treating everyone with respect goes a long way.
- Stand up for those who are being treated unfairly: This takes courage, but it’s the right thing to do.
- Forgive yourself and others for mistakes: We’re all human, and we all mess up sometimes. Forgiveness is a key part of loving mercy.
- Spend time reflecting on your relationship with God: Pray, read the Bible, or simply spend time in nature thinking about how God is working in your life.
- Be open to learning and growing: We never stop learning and growing, so be curious and seek out new experiences and perspectives.
Remember, this isn’t about being perfect. It’s about trying your best, learning from your mistakes, and striving to live a life that reflects God’s love and goodness.
