Verse 26: “He also said, ‘This is what the kingdom of God is like. A man scatters seed on the ground.'”
Jesus begins with a simple act—a man scattering seed. He is setting the stage, and we’re all invited.
Verse 27: “Night and day, whether he sleeps or gets up, the seed sprouts and grows, though he does not know how.”
Jesus explains, the man scatters the seed, and the seed sprouts and grows, and the man doesn’t even know how.
Verse 28-29: “All by itself the soil produces grain—first the stalk, then the head, then the full kernel in the head. As soon as the grain is ripe, he puts the sickle to it, because the harvest has come.”
And finally, the soil, all by itself, produces grain. When the grain is ripe, it’s harvest time. The man doesn’t force it; he simply recognises the right moment.
Remember this is a parable so we have to ask, “What is Jesus trying to teach us?” Jesus is unveiling the mystery of the Kingdom. He is saying the Kingdom is like a garden where seeds are scattered, and growth happens beyond our understanding. And the growth process is continuous, whether we’re aware of it or not. It’s not just about what we see; it’s about the ongoing, behind-the-scenes work.
There is a silent, magical quality to growth. We don’t have to micromanage; we simply play our part, and the process unfolds. This story is a reminder that transformation is a journey, not an overnight event.
The key is recognising the ripe moment. When things align, when the grain is ripe, it’s time to reap the harvest.
