Jesus and His disciples are facing a storm, and we’re about to discover the incredible peace we can find in the midst of life’s storms.
Verse 35: “That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, ‘Let us go over to the other side.'”
The sun is setting, and Jesus, says, “Let’s go to the other side.”
Verse 36: “Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him.”
Leaving the crowd on the shore, they embark on this night-time adventure. It’s not just Jesus and the disciples; there are other boats joining them.
Verse 37: “A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat so that it was nearly swamped.”
Out of nowhere, a furious storm starts. Waves are rocking the boat, and chaos unfolds, and panic sets in.
Verse 38: “Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, ‘Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?'”
And where’s Jesus in the middle of this storm drama? He’s in the stern, catching some sleep on a cushion. The disciples, panicking, wake Him up with a cry of desperation— “Don’t you care if we drown?” It’s a raw, honest plea.
Verse 39-40: “He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, ‘Quiet! Be still!’ Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. He said to his disciples, ‘Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?'”
Jesus stands up, rebukes the wind, and tells the waves to chill out. Instantly, the storm surrenders, and the sea becomes calm. Then, Jesus turns to the disciples, not with anger but with a question—”Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”
Verse 41: “They were terrified and asked each other, ‘Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!'”
The storm is over, but now the disciples are facing a different kind of shock. “Who is this?” they ask. Even the wind and waves recognise His authority.
What can we learn from this?
Storms can hit us out of nowhere. Life’s journey isn’t always smooth sailing; sometimes, we face furious storms. Jesus doesn’t just calm the storm; He commands it. His authority over the elements is a reminder of His power over the chaos in our lives. In the aftermath, Jesus questions the disciples’ fear and lack of faith. It’s an invitation to trust in His power even in the stormiest moments. The disciples, in awe, realise they’re in the presence of someone extraordinary. It’s a revelation moment, discovering the depth of Jesus’ authority.
