Hey guys! Ever felt hungry or like you weren’t getting what you needed? That’s kind of what’s happening in Mark chapter 8. We see Jesus doing some amazing things, but not everyone gets it. Let’s dive in!
Part 1: The Bread Miracles (8:1-21)
Imagine being with a massive crowd, with nothing to eat. Jesus does the impossible – twice! – feeding thousands with just a few loaves and fish.
- Study Question: Why do you think Jesus performed these miracles? Was it just about food, or something more?
Later, the religious leaders (Pharisees) challenge Jesus, demanding a sign from heaven. But they’d already seen miracles!
- Study Question: Have you ever felt like someone just wouldn’t listen, even when you had proof? How did that make you feel?
Jesus warns his disciples about the “yeast” of the Pharisees and Herod, meaning their bad influence.
- Study Question: What are some “bad influences” you have to be careful of today? How can you avoid being led astray?
Part 2: Healing and Following (8:22-38)
Jesus heals a blind man, but not instantly. It’s a gradual process.
- Study Question: Sometimes healing takes time. Have you ever experienced something like that? How did you keep believing even when things weren’t changing fast?
Next, Jesus asks his disciples who they think he is. Peter gets it right: Jesus is the Messiah, the one they’ve been waiting for.
- Study Question: Who do you think Jesus is?
But then Jesus talks about suffering and dying, and Peter freaks out! He doesn’t want his amazing leader to suffer.
- Study Question: Can you think of a time when you wanted to protect someone you cared about, even when it wasn’t the best thing for them?
Jesus teaches them that following him means taking up your own cross (challenges, sacrifices). It’s not always easy, but it leads to true life.
- Study Question: What are some “crosses” (challenges) that young people face today? How can following Jesus help us through them?
Food for Thought
- Mark chapter 8 is full of contrasts: miracles and misunderstandings, healing and hurt, earthly food and spiritual needs.
- Jesus cares about our physical needs (food, healing), but he’s even more concerned with our spiritual needs.
- Following Jesus doesn’t mean a life free of challenges. It means facing those challenges with him by our side.
So guys, as you explore this chapter, think about the deeper meanings behind the stories. What does it mean to truly follow Jesus? How can you be like the disciples, learning and growing even when you don’t understand everything?
