In this passage, we witness Jesus in a moment of intense struggle in the Garden of Gethsemane, just before his arrest and crucifixion. It’s a raw and emotional scene that offers profound insights for young people facing their own challenges.
What Happened?
Jesus takes Peter, James, and John with him to Gethsemane. He’s deeply distressed and troubled. He tells them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death,” and asks them to stay awake and keep watch with him. But they fall asleep. Jesus prays to God, asking if there’s any way to avoid the suffering he’s about to face, but ultimately submits to God’s will. He returns to find his friends sleeping again, and the cycle repeats.
Why is this Important?
This scene shows us that:
- Jesus was fully human. He felt real emotions—fear, sadness, even despair. He wasn’t some superhero immune to pain. This can be comforting to us when we struggle.
- Prayer is powerful. Even in his darkest hour, Jesus turned to God. Prayer isn’t a magic solution, but it’s a way to connect with God, express our emotions, and find strength.
- Even good friends can let us down. The disciples meant well, but they couldn’t stay awake with Jesus. We need to be prepared for times when we feel alone, even when surrounded by people.
- God’s will is ultimately what matters. Jesus didn’t want to suffer, but he accepted it because it was part of God’s plan. This teaches us about surrender and trust.

- What does Jesus’ prayer in the garden teach you about honesty with God?
- How can you be a better friend to others who are struggling, even if you don’t fully understand what they’re going through?
- What are some situations where it might be hard to accept God’s will, even if you know it’s for the best?
- How does Jesus’ example in Gethsemane inspire you to face your own challenges with courage and faith?
Challenge
The next time you’re facing a difficult situation, try to follow Jesus’ example:
- Be honest with yourself and with God about how you’re feeling.
- Turn to prayer for comfort and strength.
- Reach out to trusted friends or family for support.
- Remember that God is with you, even in the darkest moments.
- Trust that God has a plan, even if you can’t see it yet.
You are not alone. Jesus understands your struggles, and he’s there to walk with you through them.
