In this passage, we are transported to Bethany, where Jesus is having dinner at the house of Simon the Leper. A woman enters with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume and pours it on Jesus’ head. This act triggers a range of reactions from those present.
What Happened?
The woman’s action was extravagant. The perfume was worth a year’s wages, and pouring it on Jesus was a bold display of devotion. Some people, perhaps the disciples, were indignant, claiming the perfume could have been sold and the money given to the poor. Jesus, however, defended the woman’s actions, highlighting the significance of her gesture.
Why is this Important?
Jesus saw the woman’s act as a beautiful expression of love and devotion. He recognised it as an anointing for his burial, a prophetic act that prepared him for his death. Jesus also used this incident to teach a lesson about priorities. While caring for the poor is important, expressing love and devotion to God should not be neglected.
What Does This Mean for Us?
This story challenges us to think about how we express our love for God. Are our expressions of devotion genuine and heartfelt, or are they half-hearted and calculated? It also encourages us to examine our priorities. Are we so focused on worldly matters that we neglect our relationship with God?
