In this passage, we find Jesus sharing a final meal with his disciples, an event we now call the Last Supper. But this wasn’t just any meal – it was a Passover meal, filled with symbolism and significance.
What Happened?
As they ate, Jesus took bread, gave thanks, broke it, and said, “Take; this is my body.” Then he took a cup of wine, gave thanks, and offered it to them, saying, “This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many.” He concluded by saying he would not drink wine again until the kingdom of God came.
What Does This Mean?
Jesus was establishing a new covenant, a new agreement between God and humanity. The bread represented his body, broken for us, and the wine represented his blood, shed for our forgiveness. This act of sacrifice would seal the new covenant and pave the way for our salvation.
Why is this Important for Us?
This passage teaches us about the depth of Jesus’ love for us. He was willing to give up his life to restore our relationship with God. It also reminds us of the importance of remembering his sacrifice through Communion or the Lord’s Supper.
