In these verses, we encounter one of the most infamous acts of betrayal in history: Judas Iscariot’s agreement to hand Jesus over to the religious authorities for a mere thirty pieces of silver.
What Happened?
Judas, one of Jesus’ twelve disciples, secretly approached the chief priests and offered to betray his teacher. They were delighted and promised to pay him for his treachery.
Why is this Important?
This passage reveals several crucial themes:
- Betrayal: Judas’ actions demonstrate the devastating consequences of betraying someone’s trust, especially someone who loves and cares for you.

- Fulfilment of Prophecy: Jesus’ betrayal was not a surprise to God but a fulfilment of Old Testament prophecies, demonstrating God’s sovereignty and control over events.
What Does This Mean for Us?
This passage challenges us to examine our own hearts and motives:

- Integrity: Do we resist the temptation to compromise our values for personal gain?
- Forgiveness: Can we forgive those who betray us, just as Jesus forgave Judas?
