This passage is part of Jesus’ teaching about the end times, a topic that can be both fascinating and a little scary. But don’t worry, the main message is one of hope and encouragement.
What Did Jesus Say?
Jesus starts by saying that no one knows the exact time when all these things will happen, not even the angels in heaven or the Son himself, only God the Father. He then tells a story (a parable) about a man going on a journey. The man puts his servants in charge of his house, giving each one a specific task to do. He also tells the doorkeeper to stay awake and watch for his return.
What Does This Mean for Us?
This parable is a reminder that we need to be alert and ready for Jesus’ return. We don’t know when it will happen, so we need to be prepared at all times.
- Being Alert: This means being aware of what’s happening in the world around us and how it relates to God’s plan. It also means paying attention to God’s voice and guidance in our lives.
- Being Ready: This means living in a way that pleases God, following his commandments, and sharing his love with others. We need to be ready to give an account of how we have lived our lives.
The Doorkeeper: The doorkeeper in the story has a special responsibility to watch for the master’s return. This could be a reminder that we all have a role to play in preparing for Jesus’ return. We can do this by sharing the good news with others, praying for the world, and living lives that reflect God’s love.
Questions for Reflection
- What does it mean to be “alert” as a Christian?
- How can we stay “ready” for Jesus’ return in our daily lives?
- What is your “task” that God has given you to do?
- How does this passage make you feel about the future?
- What can we do to encourage each other to stay alert and ready?
Challenge
This week, take some time each day to pray for God’s guidance and strength to stay alert and ready. Also, think about how you can share the good news with someone who doesn’t know Jesus yet.
Remember, Jesus’ return is a time of hope and joy for those who are prepared. Let’s encourage each other to stay awake and be ready!
