In this passage, Jesus teaches a powerful lesson about giving and sacrifice.
What Happened?
Jesus was sitting near the temple treasury, watching people put their offerings into the collection box. Many rich people came and gave large amounts of money. Then, a poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, worth only a fraction of a penny.
Why is this Important?
Jesus called his disciples over and pointed out the widow’s offering. He explained that she had given more than all the others combined. While the rich gave out of their abundance, the widow gave out of her poverty. She put in everything she had to live on.
What Does This Mean for Us?
This story challenges our understanding of generosity and sacrifice. It’s not about the amount we give, but the attitude behind our giving.
- Sacrifice: The widow’s gift was a true sacrifice because it cost her something. She gave out of her need, not her excess.
- Motive: Jesus doesn’t criticise the rich for giving, but he highlights the widow’s selfless act. Her motive was pure, not seeking recognition or praise.
- Value: God values the heart behind our giving, not the amount. The widow’s two coins were worth more to God than the large sums given by the rich.
