In this passage, we witness a conversation between Jesus and two of his disciples, James and John, that reveals a common human desire: the pursuit of power and status. However, Jesus uses this opportunity to challenge their understanding and teach a radical new perspective on leadership.
What Happened?
James and John approached Jesus with a bold request: to sit at his right and left hand in his glory. Essentially, they wanted positions of honour and authority in Jesus’ future kingdom. Jesus responded by asking if they could share in his cup of suffering, a question that foreshadowed his impending death. They confidently answered yes, but Jesus clarified that those positions were not his to give.
The Meaning of True Greatness
Jesus then addressed all the disciples, explaining that in the world, leaders often exercise authority over others. But in God’s kingdom, greatness is defined differently. He said, “Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all” (Mark 10:43-44).
This teaching challenges our worldly understanding of success and power. It highlights the importance of humility, service, and putting others’ needs before our own. Jesus himself exemplified this principle, coming not to be served but to serve and give his life as a ransom for many.
