11 Then the Pharisees came and began to argue with Jesus, asking for a sign from heaven to test him.
The Pharisees, are the guys who like to follow and create rules. They roll up to Jesus and basically say, “Do something amazing, and then we’ll believe in you.”
So, what’s the problem with this? Jesus is showing us that sometimes, the signs are right in front of us. It’s like having the best concert ever, and some people are still waiting for the encore. The miracles are happening! Jesus is saying, “Open your eyes, don’t miss out!”
12 Sighing deeply in his spirit he said, “Why does this generation look for a sign? I tell you the truth, no sign will be given to this generation.”
That must have been a big sigh! Jesus is asking the question, “After all I have done, and you still don’t get it?” He is basically saying, “No sign for you.”
13 Then he left them, got back into the boat, and went to the other side.
I’m done with you. I’m moving on. I’ve shown you loads and you still don’t get it. The signs are there, why would more help.
Time for me to go and sail off into the sunset! We shouldn’t be waiting for signs. Jesus is all around us, we need to look out for the signs and get going on the incredible adventure Jesus wants to take you on.
What are the signs?
Good blessings happen – extra pizza slice in the fridge. Someone says hi and how are you, good stuff just happening.
Seeing things in a new light. You’ve become more patient, kind or understanding. Jesus is at work on your heart.
Peace in chaos. Life is going mad but you are at peace in the middle of it all.
Answered prayers. Jesus answering your prayers and making things happen just when you need it.
Love. You are surrounded by friends who love you and support and care for you. That is Jesus.
Wisdom comes. Jesus gives you a nudge in the right direction just when you need it.
Strength in tough times. Finding an inner strength just when you need it (and when you didn’t know you had it).
Transformation. Jesus transforming your character, freeing you from bad habits, helping you forgive others.
What is special about these signs? They are Jesus working in you. So many of us are looking out and saying where are the signs. We forget that Jesus is walking and working with us. His focus is us.
