Galatians 2:11-14: Standing Up for Truth

In this passage, Paul confronts Peter (also known as Cephas) about an issue that was causing division among the early Christians.

What Happened?

Peter had been eating with Gentile believers (non-Jews), embracing the freedom they had in Christ. However, when some Jewish believers came from Jerusalem, Peter started avoiding the Gentiles out of fear of what these Jewish believers might think. This hypocrisy influenced others, including Barnabas, to also withdraw from the Gentiles.

Why is This Important?

Paul saw this as a serious compromise of the Gospel truth. The Gospel message is that salvation is found through faith in Jesus Christ alone, not by following Jewish customs and laws. By separating from the Gentiles, Peter was implying that they needed to conform to Jewish practices to be fully accepted, which was not true.

4. Gospel Over Culture: Peter was caught between his Jewish background and the new reality of the Gospel. We must remember that the Gospel transcends cultural differences and unites all believers in Christ.
