The Book of Ruth: A Story of Love, Loyalty, and Redemption

The book of Ruth is a short but powerful story in the Bible, packed with drama, romance, and life lessons. It tells us about two women, Naomi and Ruth, who face hardship and loss, but find hope and new beginnings in a surprising place.

The Story

Naomi, an Israelite woman, moves with her husband and two sons to Moab because of a famine in their homeland. Sadly, her husband dies, and later her sons marry Moabite women, Orpah and Ruth. Tragedy strikes again when Naomi’s sons also die, leaving the three women alone and vulnerable.

Naomi decides to return to Israel, and encourages Orpah and Ruth to stay in Moab and remarry. Orpah follows her advice, but Ruth refuses to leave Naomi’s side, declaring, “Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God” (Ruth 1:16).

Back in Israel, Naomi and Ruth face poverty and struggle. Ruth, however, is determined to provide for her mother-in-law. She works hard gleaning barley in the fields, and catches the eye of Boaz, a wealthy landowner and relative of Naomi’s late husband.

Boaz is impressed by Ruth’s kindness and loyalty to Naomi. He makes sure she is treated well in his fields, and eventually, after following the proper customs, he marries Ruth. They have a son, Obed, who becomes the grandfather of King David.
