Overview
In the second chapter of the book of Ruth, we see Ruth and Naomi starting their new life in Bethlehem. Ruth, determined to provide for herself and Naomi, goes out to glean leftover grain in the fields. By chance, she ends up in the field of a wealthy landowner named Boaz, who happens to be a relative of Naomi’s late husband. Boaz notices Ruth and is impressed by her kindness and work ethic. He shows her favour, allowing her to glean freely in his fields and even inviting her to eat with his workers.
Ruth returns home with a large amount of barley, surprising Naomi. When Naomi learns of Boaz’s kindness, she sees hope for their future. Boaz, as a relative, could potentially be their “kinsman-redeemer,” someone who could marry Ruth and provide for them.
