In this scene, we see Ruth following Naomi’s plan to approach Boaz in a surprising way. It’s nighttime, and Boaz is sleeping at the threshing floor after a long day of work. Ruth quietly uncovers his feet and lies down. When Boaz wakes up, he’s startled to find a woman at his feet.
What’s Happening?
This was a very bold move on Ruth’s part. It wasn’t just about finding a husband; it was about seeking protection and security under the tradition of “kinsman-redeemer.” This ancient custom meant a close male relative would step in to care for a widow and preserve the family line. Naomi saw Boaz as that potential redeemer for Ruth.
Boaz’s Response
Boaz is a man of integrity. He recognises Ruth and understands her actions. Instead of reacting harshly, he praises her for seeking refuge with him instead of going after younger men (who might have seemed a more obvious choice for a young widow). He reassures her that he will do everything he can to help her. However, there’s a catch: there is another relative who is closer in line to be Ruth’s redeemer. Boaz promises to talk to him first.
Why is This Important?
This scene shows us a few important things:
- Trust: Ruth trusts Naomi’s wisdom and guidance, even though the plan seems unconventional.
- Courage: Ruth takes a brave step to secure her future and honour her family.
- Integrity: Boaz acts honourably and shows great respect for Ruth.
- God’s Providence: Even though this is a human plan, we see God working behind the scenes to bring Ruth and Boaz together.
