Chapter 40 marks a turning point in the story of Job. After enduring immense suffering and questioning God’s justice, Job is finally met with a direct response – not with answers, but with a powerful demonstration of who God is.
What’s Happening?
- God Speaks: God emerges from the whirlwind, the same symbol of chaos and mystery that Job has experienced in his life. This time, however, the whirlwind carries God’s voice.
- The Questions: God doesn’t explain Job’s suffering. Instead, He poses a series of rhetorical questions that challenge Job’s limited understanding. God essentially asks, “Do you have the power and wisdom to run the universe? Can you create and control all that exists?”
- The Behemoth: God describes a mighty creature, the Behemoth (possibly a hippopotamus or a dinosaur). This creature symbolises God’s immense power and creativity. It’s a reminder that there are aspects of God’s world that are beyond human comprehension.
Why Does it Matter for Young People?
- Humility: The chapter teaches us the importance of humility before God. Even Job, a righteous man, needed to recognise his limitations. It’s a reminder that we don’t have all the answers, and it’s okay to have faith in something bigger than ourselves.
- God’s Mystery: The world is full of wonder and mystery. Sometimes, we may not understand why things happen, but we can trust that God is in control.
- Strength in Weakness: Recognising our own weakness can actually be a source of strength. When we admit our limitations, we open ourselves up to God’s power and guidance.

- The Unknown: What are some things in life that we don’t understand? How can we learn to be comfortable with the unknown?
- Trust: In what ways can we trust God even when we don’t understand what’s happening?
- The Behemoth: What does the Behemoth symbolize for you? How does it illustrate God’s power and creativity?
- Personal Application: How can the lessons of Job 40 help you in your own life?
Key Verse
“Would you discredit my justice? Would you condemn me to justify yourself?”
Job 40:8 (NIV)
This verse captures the heart of God’s message to Job. It challenges us to trust God’s justice even when we can’t see the whole picture.
