Have you ever watched a nature documentary and been amazed by the incredible abilities of animals? Job chapter 39 is like God’s own nature show, highlighting the wild and wonderful creatures He created. It’s not just about cool animal facts, though. God is using these examples to teach Job (and us!) some important lessons.
The Mountain Goat and the Deer (verses 1-4)
God starts by asking Job if he knows how mountain goats and deer give birth in the wild. He’s pointing out how these animals have natural instincts and abilities that Job doesn’t control. Even without human help, they raise their young and survive in tough environments.
- Study Question: What are some animals you find amazing? How do their abilities make you appreciate God’s creation? (And for Mia I know she will say the Pig!)
The Wild Donkey (verses 5-8)
Next, God talks about the wild donkey, a creature that values its freedom. God gave it the wild places as its home, and no one can tame it. This donkey isn’t meant to work for humans; it lives on its own terms.
- Study Question: What does the wild donkey’s love of freedom teach us about God’s design for different creatures?
The Wild Ox (verses 9-12)
The wild ox is strong and powerful, but it’s not interested in helping humans with their work. It won’t pull a plough or be tied up. God made it to be wild, and that’s how it’s meant to live.
- Study Question: What does the wild ox’s strength teach us about respecting the nature of different creatures?
The Ostrich (verses 13-18)
Ostriches are known for their speed and unique behaviour. They might seem careless about their eggs, but God designed them to survive in their environment. They use their strength and speed to protect themselves.
- Study Question: Why might the ostrich seem foolish, but what strengths does it actually have?
The Horse and the Hawk (verses 19-25)
The horse is a powerful animal often used in war. God highlights its strength, speed, and bravery. The hawk, a skilled hunter, soars high in the sky, a reminder of God’s control over the skies.
- Study Question: What do the horse and hawk teach us about God’s design for strength and power in the animal kingdom?
The Eagle (verses 26-30)
Finally, God talks about the eagle, a majestic bird known for its sharp eyesight and ability to soar. Eagles build their nests in high, safe places, far away from danger.
- Study Question: How does the eagle’s behaviour teach us about God’s care and protection?
What’s the Big Picture?
Job chapter 39 isn’t just about animal trivia. God is using these examples to show Job (and us) that He is the ultimate creator. He made the world and everything in it, and He understands how it all works. Even the wildest animals are under His control. This should fill us with awe and wonder for God’s power and wisdom.
Key Takeaway: God’s creation is diverse and amazing. We should respect the unique abilities and nature of each creature, just as God designed them.
