Job 25 is the shortest chapter in the Bible. Bildad, one of Job’s friends, steps up for his final speech. He’s frustrated with Job’s persistence and his questioning of God. Bildad’s response is like a verbal slap in the face. He reminds Job of a few key things:
- God is in Charge: Bildad starts by emphasising God’s power and authority. He rules the universe, and no one can challenge Him.
- God is Holy: Everything God does is right and pure. There’s no flaw in Him.
- We Are Small: Compared to God, humans are insignificant. We’re like worms or maggots.
What’s the Point?
Bildad is trying to shut Job up. He wants Job to accept that God is always right and that Job must be the one in the wrong. It’s a harsh message, and it probably didn’t make Job feel any better.
Study Questions
- Is Bildad right? Do you think Bildad is accurately representing God’s character? Are there other things we know about God that might be important to remember?
- How would you feel? If you were Job, how would you react to what Bildad said? Would you agree with him, or would you argue back?
- What about grace? Bildad doesn’t mention God’s grace or compassion in this chapter. Why do you think that is? How does God’s love and forgiveness fit into this picture of a powerful and holy God?
- Can we question God? Job has been asking a lot of questions about why he’s suffering. Do you think it’s okay to question God? Why or why not?
- What can we learn? Even though Bildad is harsh, is there anything we can learn from his words? Does it remind us of anything important about God’s nature or our own place in the world?
Going Deeper
- Look up other passages: Read some of the Psalms that praise God’s power and majesty. Do these passages make you feel differently than Job 25?
- Talk about it: Discuss this chapter with a friend, parent, or youth leader. What are their thoughts on Bildad’s message?
- Pray about it: Ask God to help you understand His character better. Thank Him for His power and holiness, but also for His love and mercy.
