In chapter 3 of the book of Esther, we see a dark turn of events. Haman, a high-ranking official in King Xerxes’ court, becomes filled with rage and resentment.
Overview
- Haman’s Promotion: King Xerxes promotes Haman above all other officials, commanding everyone to bow down to him.
- Mordecai’s Refusal: Mordecai, Esther’s cousin and a devout Jew, refuses to bow down to Haman, citing his faith and loyalty to God.
- Haman’s Anger and Plot: Haman is infuriated by Mordecai’s defiance. He decides not only to punish Mordecai but to annihilate all Jews in the kingdom.
- Haman’s Deception: Haman tricks King Xerxes into issuing a decree ordering the extermination of all Jews on a specific date, chosen by casting lots (“Purim”).
