What’s Happening
In this passage, Jesus and his disciples are leaving the temple in Jerusalem. One of the disciples remarks on how impressive the temple buildings are. Jesus responds with a surprising statement: “Not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down.”
Why This Matters
This passage might seem a bit scary at first. Jesus isn’t just predicting a minor renovation. He’s talking about the complete destruction of the temple, a place that was central to Jewish faith and identity. This prophecy would have been shocking and unsettling for his disciples.
But Jesus isn’t just trying to scare them. He’s using this moment to teach them about the future, a future that includes both destruction and hope.
Questions to Think About
- Why do you think Jesus chose to predict the destruction of the temple? Was he just trying to show off his knowledge of the future, or was there a deeper purpose?
- How do you think the disciples felt when they heard Jesus’ prophecy? What emotions might they have experienced?
- What does this passage teach us about the nature of change? Can anything truly last forever?
- How can we find hope in the midst of destruction or difficult times? Where can we turn for comfort and support?
- In what ways might Jesus’ words challenge our own assumptions about the future? Are there any things in our lives that we think will last forever, but might not?
Digging Deeper
This passage is part of a larger section of Mark’s Gospel known as the “Olivet Discourse.” In this discourse, Jesus speaks about the end times and the events leading up to his return. It’s a complex and challenging passage, but it’s also full of hope and encouragement for those who trust in him.
Take some time to read the rest of the Olivet Discourse (Mark 13:3-37). What other insights or questions does it raise for you? How does Jesus’ teaching challenge you to think differently about the future?
