What Happened?
In Genesis 35, we find Jacob on the move again. God instructs him to go to Bethel, a significant place where he had previously encountered God in a dream. Before embarking on this journey, Jacob takes some important steps to prepare his family:
- Cleansing: He tells his household to get rid of any foreign gods or idols they might have and purify themselves. This represents a turning away from anything that might distract them from worshipping the one true God.
- Renewal: They even change their clothes, symbolising a fresh start and a commitment to a new way of life.
On their journey, some dramatic events occur:
- Deborah’s Death: Rebekah’s nurse, Deborah, passes away and is buried. This is a reminder of the passing of time and the importance of cherishing our loved ones.
- Rachel’s Death: During childbirth, Rachel dies while giving birth to Benjamin. This is a heartbreaking moment, highlighting the pain and loss that can come with life’s joys.
- God’s Reaffirmation: God appears to Jacob again at Bethel, reaffirming His covenant promises and blessing him. Jacob renames the place “El Bethel” (meaning “God of Bethel”) as a reminder of God’s presence and faithfulness.
Why is this Important?
This chapter marks a turning point in Jacob’s life. He’s finally letting go of his past mistakes and embracing God’s plan for him and his family. It’s a story about new beginnings, facing challenges, and experiencing God’s faithfulness even in the midst of sorrow.
