These verses mark a shift in Esther’s story. She’s no longer just a young woman adjusting to palace life; she’s becoming a key player in events far bigger than herself.
Commentary
- Mordecai’s Vigilance: Mordecai, Esther’s cousin and guardian, isn’t just sitting around the palace gates. He’s actively listening, observing, and gathering information. This shows us the importance of being aware of our surroundings and paying attention to what’s happening in the world around us.
- A Plot Uncovered: Two of the king’s officials, Bigthan and Teresh, are angry and hatch a dangerous plan: to assassinate the king! But Mordecai gets wind of their plot. This highlights that even in seemingly safe places, there can be hidden dangers. It also reminds us that we should always speak up if we see or hear something that could hurt others.
- Esther’s Brave Action: Mordecai informs Esther of the plot, and she doesn’t hesitate. She risks her own life to tell the king, using Mordecai’s name to give the information credibility. Esther demonstrates incredible bravery, stepping up to protect someone even when it’s scary.
- Justice Served: The king investigates, the plot is confirmed, and the would-be assassins are punished. This part of the story shows that even when things seem out of control, there is often a higher power or a sense of justice at work.
- The Book of Chronicles: The incident is recorded in the official records. This is a reminder that our actions – both good and bad – can have a lasting impact, and that history remembers those who stand up for what’s right.
