Okay, guys, this one’s heavy, but it’s also the most important story in the whole Bible. We’re talking about Jesus dying on the cross. It’s brutal, it’s heartbreaking, but it’s also the most powerful act of love the world has ever seen. This is where Jesus shows us just how much God loves us and how far He’s willing to go to save us.
Let’s walk through this together
- Betrayal and Condemnation: Jesus is betrayed by one of his own friends, Judas, and handed over to the religious leaders. They accuse him of all sorts of things and sentence him to death. (Matthew 27:1-26)
- Mocked and Crucified: The Roman soldiers mock Jesus, beat him, and force him to carry his own cross to a hill called Golgotha. There, they nail him to the cross and leave him to die. (Matthew 27:27-37)
- Darkness and Death: While Jesus is on the cross, darkness covers the land. He cries out to God, and then he dies. (Matthew 27:38-50)
- Amazing Events: The earth shakes, tombs break open, and the curtain in the temple tears in two. Even the Roman soldier guarding Jesus is amazed and says, “Surely this was the Son of God!” (Matthew 27:51-56)
Why did Jesus have to die?
- The Penalty of Sin: We all mess up and do things that are wrong. The Bible calls this sin, and it separates us from God. The penalty for sin is death, but Jesus took our place.
- God’s Love for Us: God loves us so much that He didn’t want us to be separated from Him forever. So He sent Jesus, His Son, to pay the price for our sins.
- The Bridge to God: Jesus’ death on the cross bridges the gap between us and God. Because of His sacrifice, we can be forgiven and have a relationship with God again.
- New Life: Jesus’ death makes it possible for us to have a new life, free from the power of sin and death. We can live with hope, purpose, and joy.
