Ever heard the saying “You’re the salt of the earth”? Jesus actually said that about his followers! He also called us to be the light of the world. But what does that even mean? And how can we, like, actually do that?
Let’s check out what Jesus said in Matthew 5:13-16:
“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
So, what’s the deal with salt and light?
- Salt: Salt adds flavour, preserves things, and makes you thirsty. As Christians, we’re called to make life more interesting, to help preserve what’s good in the world, and to make people thirsty for God.
- Light: Light pushes back darkness and helps people see. We’re called to shine God’s love into the world and help others see Him more clearly.
How can we live this out?
- Influence: Think of your favourite YouTuber or influencer. They have a platform and people listen to them. You have influence too! Your friends, family, and even strangers are watching you. How can you use your influence to point people to Jesus?
- Service: Jesus was all about serving others. How can you serve your community? Maybe you can volunteer at a local soup kitchen, help an elderly neighbour, or simply be a good friend to someone who needs it.
- Making a difference: You don’t have to be famous to make a difference. Even small acts of kindness can have a big impact. How can you shine God’s light in your school, your neighbourhood, or your online world?
